Black Widow star, Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney over a breach of her contract with the streaming release of “Black Widow.” Disney has responded, defending their decision.
A lawsuit was filed on Thursday at the Los Angeles Superior Court and Johansson said her contract stipulated an exclusive theatrical release. Disney however, released the movie both in cinemas and on its streaming service Disney+ at the same time.
Johansson’s lawyer, John Berlinski has claimed Disney has purposely released the film simultaneously on Disney+ to increase subscribers and boost the company’s stock price and that they are using COVID-19 as an excuse.
According to Disney, the 36-year-old actress has already earned $20M for the film, but Johansson is looking for compensation for the loss of her box office earnings due to the simultaneous release.
The statement is reported to say:
“In the months leading up to this lawsuit, Ms. Johansson gave Disney and Marvel every opportunity to right their wrong and make good on Marvel’s promise.”
“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the Agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.”
Disney has responded to the statement saying, “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing.” Disney's statement says:
“The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”
The film was released in Australia on the 8th of July and has grossed over $319 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo.

Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to take on the lead role in sci-fi series Doctor Who, will be leaving the television show next year, the BBC says.
The British actress has portrayed The Doctor - a shape-shifting alien Time Lord played by men since the show first appeared on UK television screens in 1963 - since 2017.
The 39-year-old, who described the role as "the best job I have ever had," will feature in a six-part Event Serial in the northern hemisphere autumn as well as in three specials planned for next year.
Showrunner Chris Chibnall will also leave the production in 2022.
"In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them," Whittaker said in a statement.
"My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life... I don't think I'll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I've learnt forever."
Whittaker played the show's 13th Doctor, a casting which when first announced sparked online debates.
Last year, she was voted the show's second most popular Doctor in a poll for listings magazine Radio Times.
Actor David Tennant came first.
Who will take over the role from Whittaker has yet to be announced.

A new app can tell you if your cat is happy - though this might be obvious if your feline friend has just peed in your shoes or dropped a mouse on your bed.
With the Tably app, you point your device at your cat’s face and take a few photos. Its clever algorithm will then decipher how your cat is feeling.
You’ll get one of two interpretations: “All seems good”, meaning your cat is happy right now.
Or “Don’t be alarmed”, which means your cat is probably feeling a bit discontent but the app says you shouldn’t be worried unless you keep getting this result again and again.
Some cat owners might joke that this isn’t nearly enough moods to cover all of their cat’s emotions, but there’s actually a serious side to the app.
The data it uses to interpret your cat’s mood is based on the Feline Grimace Scale, which assess pain in cats based on their facial features.
“Cats are great at hiding their pain, so they often suffer needlessly,” the app by Sylvester.ai explains.
The idea is to help cats live longer by getting owners to snap photos of their kitty throughout the day to monitor their long-term well-being and make sure they're not in pain.
The app warns that to get the best results you should ensure your cat “is in good lighting, and is awake and not grooming, eating or vocalising”. And it doesn’t work on kittens.
We tested it on a photo of one of those hairless cats that always look cranky about life and the app said it was happy. So there you go - proof again that looks are deceiving!

Yep, cleaning rompers exist because apparently it's never too soon to teach your child the importance of chores!
The amusing new product, now being sold on Amazon and through Fruugo Australia, is the perfect solution for new parents finding it difficult to keep their house clean.
We get it, being a parent can be exhausting, and the duty of 'Mum' or 'Dad' often leaves you little time or energy to dust, mop, sweep and clean and if your bub's already crawling all over the joint, there's no harm in reaping the benefits, right?
The cleaning rompers are machine-washable, soft and made of high quality cotton. Each one features four ultra-absorbent mop head areas down the arms, torso and legs "designed to clean and shine your floor."
Fruugo Australia says the onesie is "great for casual daily wear or as a funny costume for new crawlers."
Hilariously, the product also boasts fitness benefits for your bub, "crawling is an effective workout to burn off energy and tone body muscle, your baby will become stronger and healthier while mopping."
Purchasers with a sense of humour have left mixed reviews.
Ang D was surprised to find "you have to buy the baby separately", while Brooke admitted it had disappointing results saying "It did not work as I had planned, instead of a clean floor I had a smudgy circle of drool. This is either a bad product or I have a lazy baby." We're thinking it's the latter.
The only question now is what colour onesie are you going to buy?
Happy crawling cleaning!
