What do you do when you hear the news that NASA is launching a satellite to crash into an asteroid because it’s headed towards Earth? Immediately start bingeing the best apocolypse movies featuring Earth-threatening asteroids of course!

We've saved you some research time and come up with our top 5 of all time including a brand new release that looks out-of-this-world!

1. Armageddon (1998)

The most famous movie on this list, Armageddon stars Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, and Ben Affleck.

The movie follows a team of deep-core drillers who are recruited by NASA to stop an asteroid 110 miles wide from hitting Earth.

Bruce Willis' appearance in Armageddon is so iconic, people are calling on Willis to head into space to fix the current real-life asteroid issue.

2. Apollo 18 (2011)

As the title suggests, this film follows the last mission of NASA's Apollo program: Apollo 18.

The team believes they're on a standard mission until after they land and find strange tracks all over the moon.

Suspenseful and shudder-inducing, this is basically The Blair Witch Project but in space.

3. Deep Impact (1998)

This movie stars Robert Duvall, Elijah Wood and Tea Leoni, among many others.

The premise of this film is that a giant comet is on a crash course with Earth and a team of astronauts and scientists must somehow destroy or deflect the comet to save the planet.

Produced by one of today's most successful filmmakers, Steven Spielberg, you better watch this one on the biggest screen in your house.

4. Seeking A Friend for the End of the World (2012)

Starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightle, Seeking A Friend for the End of the World is about a quirky asteroid film with a love of heart and soul.

The protagonist, Dodge, realizes that he has little remaining time with his family and decides to find a friend to help him through this difficult time.

Eventually, Dodge finds a woman named Penny who assists him in finding closure from his loss.

5. Don’t Look Up (2021)

Okay so this one’s about a comet, not an asteroid, but it’s still a worthy inclusion.

This apocalypse comedy drama from Netflix is about two low-level astronomers played by Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio- ummm what a pairing!

They discover a comet on a collision course with Earth and go on a media tour to warn everyone.

The all-star cast of Don't Look Up also includes Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi and Cate Blanchett.

So what are you waiting for?

Start filling up your streaming library now so when disaster strikes (or not, whatever) you’ll be ready.

Here's hoping these recommendations don't come in handy in real life any time soon. Happy viewing!

Attack of the asteroid on the Earth

US space agency NASA is preparing to launch a satellite that will deliberately crash into an asteroid, aiming to alter its course in the first mission of its kind.

The planetary defence probe, powered by a Falcon 9 rocket made by Elon Musk's SpaceX, is set to take off on Wednesday from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

It is due to smash into the Dimorphos asteroid in October next year, in what has been dubbed the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART).

Dimorphos, a moonlet whose diameter measures about 160 metres, does not pose a danger to Earth, according to NASA's calculations.

The mission is designed to ensure that even after the impact, there would be no risk to the planet.

The European Space Agency mission Hera is scheduled to launch a mission in 2024 to study the impact in greater detail.

NASA hopes the mission, costing about $US330 million ($A457 million), will deliver insights about how to protect Earth from any approaching asteroids.

Scientists are not aware of any asteroids currently threatening Earth but have identified some 27,000 asteroids in our planet's proximity, with some 10,000 of them measuring more than 140 metres in diameter.

** ADVANCE FOR WEEKEND EDITIONS JULY 11-14 ** Australian naturalist Steve Irwin smiles at his American wife, Terri, as they talk about their part-fiction, part-documentary comedy

It’s been 15 years since we lost crocodile hunter Steve Irwin and our collective heartbreak will never go away.

Neither, it seems, will the rumours of wife Terri Irwin being romantically linked with various high profile men including Russell Crowe, Richard Wilkins and most recently John Travolta.

Speaking to QWeekend recently for the anniversary of Steve’s death, Terri made it clear that Steve was the love of her life and she is still "very, very, very single”.

"I keep saying this, and I think maybe 15 years later people are finally starting to believe me, Steve was it for me," Terri said. "That's just the way it is. I had a big, big love and it was enough to last a lifetime."

The 57year-old says she’s too busy to chase anyone anyway, what with running Australia Zoo and doting on granddaughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell.

"You know, Grace is just pure joy, she's brought all the wonder back to us," Terri said.

"When I take her for our early morning walks, introducing her to all the animals, I see it all through her eyes, and it just takes me back to when I first came here, then Steve and I had the kids, it's full circle."

Bindi posted a tribute to her Dad on Instagram on Steve Irwin Day on November 15, writing: "Your legacy will live on forever. I love you for even longer."

Robert also posted a tribute, writing that he was "a truly amazing dad" that he still looks up to every day. "Through a lifetime captured on camera and stories from my family and those who knew him best, I’m able to remember the special times with dad."
