redhead gingers super powers

Redheads assemble! A doctor has revealed that according to science, people with the 'ginger gene' have four secret superpowers that other hair colours don’t.

Red hair is actually only found in one to two per cent of the human population and is associated with a gene found on chromosome 16 called the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R). The pigment pheomelanin is what gives red hair its distinct colour. This gene also gives people with red hair certain traits that can be considered as ’secret super powers’.

Dr Karan Raj from the UK posted the viral video to his TikTok which currently has over 600K views. The NHS surgical doctor, educator and lecturer shared four ’super powers’ listed below.

1. Redheads are way better at detecting temperature changes.

"Researchers think the MC1R gene, the red hair causing gene over activates the temperature detecting gene. If a ginger person says they feel cold, winter’s coming,” Dr Karan says.

According to a study published in “Anesthesiology” researchers tested 30 women with red hair and 30 women with dark hair with a temperature device and found redheads were more sensitive to cold temperatures and had less tolerance for hot temperatures. Health Digest says redheads are the first to start shivering when the temperature drops.

2. Redheads smell better.

"We all have this thin acidic film on the surface of our skin, the acid mantle. The combination of lipids from oil glands and amino acids from sweat. This mantle is more acidic in redheads, causing perfumes to evaporate more quickly, giving a unique scent.”

The scent on a redheads skin will smell different and this phenomenon was first recorded back in 1886 from Dr. Augustin Galopin in his book, 'Le Parfum de la Femme’. It states that he tested the theory out and was able to detect the unique scent from redhead women. As Dr Raj mentions, the acidic layer on their skin interacts differently with perfumes giving them a unique scent.

3. Redheads make more Vitamin D.

"When a redhead goes outside, they can produce more Vitamin D in a shorter amount of time than any other hair colour.”

This is backed up by a book written by Erin La Rosa called “The Big Redhead Book” where it’s mentioned that redheads can actually create their own vitamin D. They can produce more vitamin D than others which is an evolutionary advantage protecting them from ailments.

4. Some redheads but not all, might have a higher pain threshold.

"It might be due to the fact that the ginger gene also has a role to play in pain processing. If you’re naturally ginger, you need to tell your doctor before surgery because you might need more anaesthetic or pain relief.”

A study by McGill University in 2003 proved that redheaded women could tolerate pain by up to 25 percent more than people with other hair colours and that they’re harder to sedate. Medical Daily reports redheads also need 20 per cent more anaesthesia than others. Dr Karan notes in a comment, "The link between red hair & pain sensitivity isn't fully understood so some might have a greater pain sensitivity - but important before surgery!"

Red-haired users took to the comments section to confirm the 'super powers' with one commenting, "Can confirm this is all true. Any slight change in temp and my body freaks out. Pain threshold thing is very true." A fellow doctor wrote, "They always need more anesthesia for dental surgery! At least that's what 23 years of practice taught me."

Another TikTok user joked, "Ed Sheeran has all these powers?!" to which Dr Karan replies, "Maybe and more."

The latest teaser for Stranger Things Season 4 has just dropped and it doesn't give away too much.

But what it does show is some pretty heavy action sequences towards the end. But let's start from the beginning.

After the end of season 3, it is believed that Hopper is dead. So Eleven becomes part of the Byers family.

California is where (at least part of) Stranger Things Season 4 is being set with Eleven and the Byers family moving state.

Jonathan, Will, and Eleven all have to come to grips with a massive life-changing experience.

New school, new friends, and new jobs. Let's just hope Eleven doesn't go Carrie on her new school.

Spring Break seems to be a big focus as well, with the time being set for Spring of 1986.

And in terms of episodes, we also got a sneak peek at the episode name list in this video.

Here's the list for all of us to speculate over.

  • Chapter One: The Hellfire Club
  • Chapter Two: Vecna's Curse
  • Chapter Three: The Monster and the Superhero
  • Chapter Four: Dear Billy
  • Chapter Five: The Nina Project
  • Chapter Six: The Dive
  • Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab
  • Chapter Eight: Papa
  • Chapter Nine: The Piggyback

And lastly, over in New York and LA, Netflix has just launched a Stranger Things pop-up store/experiences. Who do you think would LOVE this to come down under?

steak dishwasher

A man has cooked a steak in his dishwasher and says it came out “AMAZING”.

Mike George, who is an award-winning journalist for CBS in America, posted the video to his Twitter showing the process of cooking his steak to perfection.

He seasons the steak then vacuum seals it before putting it in the top rack of the dishwasher and starting a 96 minute cycle.

Then he brings the steak out of the bag and pops it into a pan on the stove with some herbs and garlic before slicing it up and showing the medium rare goodness to the camera.

He doesn’t actually film himself eating it, but we’ll have to trust him that he did!

It’s a different method for sure and may not take off given it would be less hassle to cook the steak the old fashioned way on a grill or stove top.

But Mike explains in a reply to a commenter that he did it “for science”.

And why go to all that effort just to cook it in a pan at the end as well? He explains that he put it in the pan to brown the outside, “but all the internal cooking was done in the dishwasher”.

When a commenter asks if he’s started a food TikTok yet, Mike shares his TikTok handle but says he has no followers.

We checked out his TikTok - @mikegeorgeeatstheworld - where he sets out to cook food from every country/culture in the world. At the time of writing he has 78 followers. Hopefully his steak science experiment will bring him some extra fans!

At the very least, this food trick here is gold:

lion cubs taronga zoo

Five beautiful Lion cubs have made their public debut at Taronga Zoo in Sydney after being born on the 12th of August, 2021. The five cubs who are currently 12 weeks old, weigh around 11-13kg each and were born to experienced mum Maya and father Ato who is a first-time dad.

The names of the cubs are Khari, Malika, Zuri and Ayanna with the one male cub Khari named by the public which means 'like a king' in Swahili and the other male cub named Luzuko which is of South African origin meaning 'glory' was chosen by Taronga's carnivore keepers.

The three female cubs have Swahili names, Malika meaning 'like a queen', Zura meaning 'beautiful', and Ayanna meaning 'beautiful flower' in recognition of their native homeland.lion cubs taronga zoo 1

Carnivore Unit Supervisor Louise Ginman said about the growing cubs:

“It’s been such an honour to watch these five precious Lion cubs as they develop their own unique personalities. It has been over 18 years since we’ve heard the pitter-patter of Lion cub paws at Taronga Zoo and it the first time ever we have had a full pride in the new African Savannah."

“The cubs have changed so much over the course of their little lives. Our guests are going to be in for a real treat every time they come to visit and see the cubs – with so many milestones on the horizon, no two visits will be the same.”

The cubs will have access to their exhibit for certain times of the day depending on their rest times/family bonding times. They will spend more time in their holding yard before they move into their main exhibit so they can build their confidence and learn 'important lion behaviours' such as climbing and foraging.

The public have been able to watch the cubs via Taronga TV's cub cam in which CEO Cam Kerr AO says:

“Cub Cam was such an incredible initiative and gave our community a sneak peek into the lives of the cubs from the very beginning and importantly, an opportunity to support lions in the wild.

“Now that Sydney has reopened, we’re so excited to welcome back our guests and Zoo Friends to meet these new arrivals and to connect with wildlife. As Sydney’s only not-for-profit zoo, every time you visit, you support us to deliver vital conservation work both here in Australia and around the globe.”

The lions are a part of the 'African Savannah', an experience at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney. The Taronga Conservation Society of Australia is an important part of regional breeding programs which help support the lion populations. With lions sadly extinct in 27 African counties, the cubs are a welcome addition to the lion population and with only 20,000 African Lions remaining in the wild, every cub counts.

Mother Maya has been an incredible contributor to the breeding program. The gestation period for African lions is 110 days and Taronga's keepers have been following the same natural process with the cubs getting used to their father Ato with daily introductions.

Although it's not guaranteed the cubs will be out and active, they will have access to their exhibit from 10am to 2pm with their mother Maya and from 2pm onwards with their dad Ato. You can visit them at Taronga Zoo Sydney's African Savannah exhibit.
