TikTok will be banned on government devices in NSW over cybersecurity concerns as Premier Chris Minns follows the Commonwealth and several other states.
The prohibitions on the Chinese-owned app follow intelligence agency advice about TikTok's parent company ByteDance, which focused on potential data harvesting.
Mr Minns said NSW government employees would be advised to implement the change as soon as possible, with the popular social media app to be scrubbed from their computers and phones.
TikTok will also be banned from government devices in Queensland, the ACT, SA, Victoria and the NT, with WA likely to follow suit.
Mr Minns said NSW government staff may still use TikTok on occasion to communicate with the public on issues like health.
"The NSW government will be implementing a number of mitigations to ensure that the security risk of this use is managed appropriately," he said.
The premier has deleted his own account, which was used heavily throughout the recent NSW election and had more than 10,000 followers.
"I deleted it last night. That's the advice from Cyber Security NSW," he told Sydney radio 2GB on Thursday.
"We've looked at other jurisdictions around the world - the European Union, the United States as well as the commonwealth government in the last 72 hours.
"We think it's the appropriate decision," he said.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, who has more than 100,000 followers, will also delete his account.
NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles has asked government employees to delete TikTok on phones that have access to their government email account by Tuesday.
However, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, with 30,000 followers, said she was still unsure.
"The federal government has not banned the accounts, it's about them being on government devices, we will listen to what the federal government says," she said.
Responding to the federal government ban earlier this week, TikTok executive Lee Hunter said there was no evidence the app posed a security risk.
"We are extremely disappointed by this decision which, in our view, is driven by politics, not by fact," he said.

Jarryd Hayne could be leaving home for the last time in the foreseeable future as he attends court for a bail review.
The 35-year-old former NRL star maintained his innocence "100 per cent" after he was found guilty on Tuesday on two counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
Bail was continued and he was not required to appear in court on Wednesday for the first time in weeks.
Hayne's bail will be reviewed on Thursday.
The trial beginning in March was his third on charges laid in November 2018 following a referral to police by the NRL integrity unit.
Weeks earlier, Hayne attended the suburban Newcastle home of a woman who cannot be identified for legal reasons on NRL grand final night 2018.
A taxi waited outside as he played the woman songs on a laptop and watched the end of the grand final with her mother.
He was found guilty of performing oral and digital sex without consent following a two-week trial in the NSW District Court.
The non-consensual sex acts lasted about 30 seconds, ending when she began to bleed, the trial heard.
Continuing his bail following the guilty verdicts on Tuesday afternoon, Judge Graham Turnbull told Hayne he should not take it as an indication of how his bail will be treated in the future, indicating he is likely to be taken into custody on Thursday while he awaits sentencing.
Hayne previously spent nine months in prison after a jury in his second trial found him guilty, a verdict overturned on appeal due to "profoundly wrong" legal directions.
The jury in the first trial was discharged after being unable to reach a verdict.
Outside court, eyes welling, Hayne said on Tuesday he gave "factual evidence".
"I never lied to the police. I never deleted evidence. I never hid witnesses," he said.
"You do the math," he told the media scrum following him across the street outside court after the verdict was delivered.

Jarryd Hayne is too high-profile to go to jail just yet after being found guilty on two rape counts, his lawyer argues.
His wife faces the prospect of continuing to live off her husband's savings from his successful sporting career when he eventually does enter custody, whether on Thursday or a later date.
Hayne's barrister Margaret Cunneen SC called his wife to the witness box in the NSW District Court on Thursday and argued there were special or exceptional circumstances that should keep him out of jail until he's sentenced.
The 35-year-old fallen NRL star was found guilty on Tuesday of two counts of sexual intercourse without consent after sexually assaulting a woman on the night of the 2018 NRL grand final.
His wife Amelia Bonnici cried when asked if she and Hayne, married since 2021, had three children.
She was asked what the next few weeks would mean for her and her family without her husband around.
"I can't even put that into words," she said.
She told the court the family have been "living off my husband's savings" as he has not had paid employment since being charged.
They will continue to do so while Hayne is in custody, she said.
The two-time Dally M Medal winner needs to be around to support and physically protect his family as they move out of Sydney before he returns to jail, Ms Cunneen told the judge.
"It would be so oppressive to take this man from his family while those arrangements are made," Ms Cunneen said.
The woman he assaulted in her suburban Newcastle bedroom cannot be identified.
A taxi waited outside as he played the woman songs on a laptop and watched the end of the grand final with her mother before performing nonconsensual oral and digital sex on the woman for about 30 seconds, before they cleaned blood off themselves and Hayne continued on his journey to Sydney.
Ms Cunneen said special or exceptional circumstances including "unrelenting media pressure" on her famous client's case and the need to support his family should continue Hayne's bail.
She argued to Judge Graham Turnbull the circumstances in Hayne's case would prevent the judge being bound by recent changes to the bail act, which aims for people found guilty who will be going to prison to be taken into custody before they are sentenced.
"He's going to jail," Judge Turnbull clarified.
Reports will need to be prepared before Hayne is sentenced and the judge is considering whether Hayne should be allowed to remain at large until then.
"This particular offender would be a target in the general prison population," Ms Cunneen said.
"My problem at the moment is he's not going in as a sentenced prisoner, he's going in as a remand prisoner," the judge said.
Crown prosecutor John Sfinas said that happened all the time and the special or exceptional circumstances raised by Ms Cunneen were not covered by the legislation.
"All it comes down to is the offender is a high-profile footballer," Crown prosecutor John Sfinas said.
The trial beginning in March was Hayne's third on charges laid in November 2018 following a referral to police by the NRL integrity unit.
Hayne previously spent nine months in prison after a jury in his second trial found him guilty, a verdict overturned on appeal due to "profoundly wrong" legal directions.

Collingwood star Jack Crisp is being investigated after a video full of crude images appeared on social media.
The Magpies on Wednesday night confirmed they were aware of the video of Crisp circulating online.
"The club has been in contact with the AFL and will work through the situation before providing a further update," a club statement read.
The video shows a person scrolling through several screenshots of Snapchats, many clearly showing Crisp's bearded face.
Several of the photos appear to show illicit substances.
The last two images are explicit and shows a man standing, but his face is not visible.
It's not known how old the content is or whether those graphic images are of Crisp.
Collingwood were forced to deal with a drugs scandal involving young gun Jack Ginnivan during the pre-season.
Ginnivan was banned for the first two rounds of the season after being filmed taking an illicit substance in the cubicle of a nightclub.
Crisp has played an extraordinary 191 consecutive games dating back to round 18, 2014 when he played for the Brisbane Lions.
The games streak is comfortably the most by a current player, well ahead of Melbourne star Christian Petracca (110).
Undefeated Collingwood will tackle the under-fire Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in an intriguing clash on Thursday night.
