Indonesia issued a tsunami warning for almost three hours after a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Tanimbar islands, but no significant changes in sea level were recorded and the warning has been lifted.
At least four aftershocks were reported after Tuesday's quake that was also felt in Darwin and other parts of northern Australia, with initial reports by Indonesia's disaster agency indicating mainly light to medium damage to buildings, officials said.
The quake, locally measured as magnitude 7.5, struck at a depth of 130km at 2.47am local time, the country's geophysics agency BMKG said. The tsunami warning was lifted at 5.43am.
"Based on our observation of four tide gauges around the earthquake's epicentre ... there was no anomaly detected or no significant changes of sea level," BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati told a news conference, advising people who lived near the coast to continue with their activities.
Residents in Darwin and other Top End locations reported "violent" shaking for more than two minutes, with many rushing outside after they were jolted awake early on Tuesday.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded the magnitude of the quake as 7.6, after initially reporting it as 7.7. The US Geological Survey also pegged it as a 7.6 magnitude.
There were four aftershocks with the strongest recorded at 5.5 magnitude, BMKG said.
Indonesia's disaster agency officials were still checking for the full extent of the quake's impact.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake has struck off the Tanimbar islands in Indonesia, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre says, with the tremor felt as far away as Darwin.
The powerful tremor struck before 3am local time on Tuesday at a depth of 130 kilometres, Indonesia's geophysics agency BMKG said.
Disaster agency BNPB was checking for the extent of the quake's impact, but early reports showed light to medium damage to buildings, its spokesperson said.
News website Liputan6.com reported houses in Saumlaki town in Yamdena island were badly damaged.
The country issued a tsunami warning for almost three hours after the quake, but no significant changes in sea level were recorded.
The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre assessed there was no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.
The quake jolted residents awake in Darwin about 3.15am, the ABC reported.
Darwin resident Trevor Power told the Nine Network the quake was the worst he had felt in 40 years in the city and over two minutes it shook more and more, accompanied by a roaring sound.
"The house started shaking then she really started shaking to the point you could hear the windows start to rattle and creak," he said.
Mr Power said his family rushed outside where the car was shaking in the driveway and the dogs were "going absolutely crazy".
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre recorded the magnitude as 7.6 after initially reporting it as 7.7.
The US Geological Survey also pegged it as 7.6 and Indonesia's BMKG recorded it as a 7.5.

Bills NFL player Damar Hamlin is back in Buffalo a week after going into cardiac arrest and having to be resuscitated on the field during a game in Cincinnati.
Hamlin was discharged from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on Monday morning and flown to the Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, where Dr William Knight said the safety was "doing well".
"This is the beginning of the next stage of his recovery," Dr Knight said.
Doctors said Hamlin has been walking since Friday, and eating regular food and undergoing therapy.
They said he was on a normal or even accelerated trajectory in his recovery from cardiac arrest, which is considered a life-threatening event.
"We continue to be ecstatic about his recovery," Dr Timothy Pritts said.
Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute said in a statement that "the goal of the transfer .... is to get (Hamlin) closer to home for further evaluation, recovery and eventually discharge and rehabilitation".
Hamlin's return comes a day after he cheered on the Bills from his hospital bed during their regular-season-ending 35-23 win over the New England Patriots.
The game provided a cathartic outpouring of support for the Bills and Hamlin.
"Headed home to Buffalo today with a lot of love on my heart," Hamlin said in a tweet on Monday.
The Bills wore 'No.3 Hamlin' patches on their jerseys on Sunday and honoured their teammate by raising three fingers in the closing minutes, while tight end Dawson Knox celebrated his touchdown by forming his hands into the shape of a heart.
Hamlin responded on his Twitter account with a heart message directed toward Knox.
Fans joined in, with many holding up red heart and No.3 signs.
Bills coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane briefly saw Hamlin after he landed in Buffalo.
"We're happy to have him back." McDermott said. "He's a little bit tired, but it was good to get to see him in person for the first time in a while."
The 24-year-old Hamlin has made significant progress in his recovery since spending his first two days at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center under sedation and breathing through a ventilator.
By Friday, Hamlin was able to breathe on his own and addressed the team by videoconference, in which he told the Bills, "Love you boys".
The latest update from doctors came on Saturday, when they described Hamlin's neurological function as "excellent", though he remained listed in critical condition.
Hamlin's heart stopped after making what appeared to be a routine tackle in the first quarter against the Bengals.
