Cattle are on the run and a truck driver has suffered minor injuries after his rig crashed into a house in South Australia's mid-north.

The incident occurred early on Monday morning in Ludgvan Street in Burra.

The truck hit the front verandah of the property with the 43-year-old driver taken to the Burra Hospital with minor injuries.

Police say many of the cattle on board escaped and are roaming the area.

They have urged motorists to take care with concerns the animals may be distressed.

Other cows injuries in the crash will be euthanised at the scene.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours while the scene is cleared and a heavy vehicle tow truck brought in.
